NYC Middle School Developmental Soccer League

The NYC Middle School Developmental Soccer League is pleased to once again organize a Fall Manhattan boys and girls Middle School League where 20 teams from all over Manhattan divide themselves into an Uptown and Downtown League that plays for 8-10 weeks in the Fall. The Uptown and Downtown girls and boys division champions meet for the grand finale on Randall’s Island under the lights with families and friends in attendance.

The purpose of the League is to offer a soccer sport opportunity for students, regardless of athletic ability, from Manhattan schools, encouraging a life-long pursuit of physical activity and opportunities to do sport in after-school hours.

New York City Department of Parks and Recreation
Thanks to the recognition given by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, this league can now coordinate its fields throughout the City under the Middle School Developmental League collaborative program ensuring that New York City’s public schools are given its fair share of time on the City’s soccer fields as the private schools and clubs have enjoyed for many years. Serving an average of 11-20 children per team, two teams per school, this 20-school league can now offer a healthy after-school activity for 400-600 students.

League history and thanks to the organizers:
LYS thanks Co-Executive Director, Orlando Gil, for his vision of an urban soccer school league for younger students from public schools who could simply play in their nearest Parks Department fields. One that didn’t require you to have money to join, or have to own a car to get to far away games. Thanks to Council Member Rosie Mendez for her initial funding which served as a catalyst to propel this project. Thanks to Uptown Commissioners Neil Potter and Rob Schliessman who were organizing teams to play all over Manhattan for some years before joining forces with LYS in 2007 to build on their initial success as chief organizers. They both organize the entire Uptown Division each fall. LYS also thanks John D. Matteo who’s boundless energy as MAT’s Physical Education Teacher, organizer of the Citywide track and field, 2009 Department of Education’s Blackboard awardee, who rallied, organized and coordinated the league together with Downtown League Commissioner, Fiodhna O’Grady.

We thank NYC DOE C.H.A.M.P.S program for paying for the after-school time of the Physical Education Teachers for coaching and bringing their teams to the League every fall. Click here to contact us regarding this program.
